Course: W-Shape lashes course · Module 1 of 4
W-shape lashes (often sold simply as “W lashes”) are premade fans whose fibres rise from a joined base and split into tips that form a “W”. They give a light, textured volume without you having to build each fan by hand. Throughout this course we work with Lash Canarias’ W Shape Technological Volume lashes, available in 3D, 4D and 5D, 0.07 mm thickness, C and D curls and a MIX tray from 8 to 15 mm. In this first module you will learn what they are, how manufacturers who publish details say they are built, how they differ from handmade fans and conventional premade fans, and which advantages and limitations the sources describe.
Before you start: this online course is for educational and informational purposes only and does not replace hands-on, in-person training with a qualified trainer. To work with W-shape lashes you should already be confident with isolation and classic technique. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for every product.
Module objectives
- Explain what a W-shape lash is and how it is built.
- Tell it apart from a handmade fan and from a conventional premade or promade fan.
- Know the variants of the W Shape Technological Volume lashes sold in the shop.
- Weigh up the advantages and limitations the sources mention, separating facts from marketing claims.
What are W-shape lashes?
A W-shape lash is a premade fan: several fine fibres joined at the base which, instead of opening into a rounded fan, split into tips that form a “W”. You apply it like any volume fan: one unit on one single, well-isolated natural lash. Never on several lashes at once.
How they are built
There is no manufacturing standard, and the sources show it:
- Curacoro describes the W as fibres placed side by side to form a “W”, with a flat, wide base, in contrast with promade fans, whose fibres are stacked into a narrow, pointed base.
- SENSELASHES calls it a “triple-prong” design that splays from a shared base in a W or U shape, in a flatter plane than a rounded volume fan. Its 3D version uses three 0.07 mm fibres.
- Vavalash describes its 4D W as four lashes woven together and says the weave keeps the shape intact during application and wear.
- LashBase sells W lashes made of six bonded fibres, describing them as similar to YY lashes but in a W shape.
The practical takeaway is simple. By industry convention the “D” tells you how many fibres make up each fan (Pro Lash), but the exact shape of the tips and base varies from one manufacturer to another. When you open a new tray, look under good light at how many fibres each unit has, where they split and what the base looks like. You will need that observation in Module 3 to decide how much adhesive to use.
Why “technological”?
“Technological volume” (volumen tecnológico) is a trade name used in the Spanish-speaking market for premade lashes with special shapes, such as YY or W lashes. We have not found a standard technical definition of the term, so in this course we simply say “W-shape” or “W lashes”.
The Lash Canarias W Shape Technological Volume lashes
| Feature | Options available |
|---|---|
| Volume | 3D, 4D, 5D |
| Thickness | 0.07 mm |
| Curls | C, D |
| Length | MIX 8–15 mm |
All variants share the same thickness, so the difference between 3D, 4D and 5D lies in the number of fibres and therefore in the weight. Module 2 covers how to choose according to each client’s natural lashes, and Module 3 how to apply them and map a set with the MIX tray. You will also need isolation and volume tweezers and a professional adhesive.
W-shape vs handmade and premade fans
Handmade fans
You build them yourself at each appointment from loose lashes. Lash Affair highlights that they offer complete customisation (width, fibre count and spread of each fan) and that their thin, pinched base needs less adhesive. You can, for example, place a larger fan on a strong lash and a smaller one on the finer lash next to it. The trade-off is the learning curve: according to the same source, mastering them takes months of consistent practice.
Conventional premade and promade fans
These are made in a factory, with the fibres held together at the base by a small amount of adhesive or by heat (Lash Affair). They are uniform and quick, but their base is usually slightly thicker than a handmade fan’s, which calls for more adhesive, and you cannot adjust width or fibre count on the fly. Quality also varies: Lash Affair warns that cheap premades can show uneven spreads and inconsistent fibre counts.
W-shape
W lashes share the pros and cons of any premade, with two particular features: the fibres sit side by side rather than stacked (Curacoro), and the tips open in a flatter plane than a rounded fan (SENSELASHES). The result is a textured finish with defined spikes.
| Aspect | Handmade | Premade / promade | W-shape |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who makes it | The lash artist, at each appointment | The manufacturer | The manufacturer |
| Customisation | Complete | Fixed configuration | Fixed configuration |
| Base | Thin and pinched | Thicker; narrow and pointed in promade | Fibres side by side; shape varies by brand |
| Learning curve | Months of practice | Shorter | Shorter, but needs very precise isolation |
| Finish | Depends on your technique | Rounded fan | “W” tips, textured effect |
Pay attention to the base, because the sources disagree. Curacoro and Swaniya describe a wide, flat base; SENSELASHES describes the base of its 3D W as “ultra-narrow” and that of its 4D and 5D as “snug”. That is one more reason to inspect your tray before you start rather than assuming.
Advantages cited by the sources
- Speed. Lash Affair estimates that skipping fan-making can save 30 to 60 minutes on a volume set (a figure for premades in general, not only W lashes).
- Consistency. Every unit in a tray has the same size, spread and fibre count.
- Stable structure. SENSELASHES and Vavalash state that the pre-formed shape holds during application and wear, so the tips keep their definition.
- Textured finish. A spiky effect with more density than a classic set.
- Versatility. LashBase recommends them for hybrid or light-volume sets, and Curacoro links them with quick light volume.
Some suppliers claim the flat base gives better retention and stops the lash from twisting. These are marketing claims we have not found backed by independent studies, so treat them with caution. Retention depends mainly on your technique, the adhesive, the conditions in your treatment room and the client herself, as you will see in Module 4.
Limitations and precautions
- Fixed configuration. You cannot tailor each unit to each lash as you would with handmade fans; you can only choose between 3D, 4D and 5D.
- Base weight. Lash Affair warns that the thicker base of premades needs more adhesive and can be a problem on very fine natural lashes.
- Demanding isolation. Because the tips are wider than the base, a neighbouring lash that is not fully separated easily sticks to the W (SENSELASHES).
- Wicking adhesive. If adhesive reaches the point where the tips split, capillary action pulls it upwards and can fuse them into a single spike that is heavier and less attractive (SENSELASHES).
- Precise base contact. Swaniya notes that W lashes need more precise base contact and rates them for intermediate artists and above.
- Single thickness. Every variant in the shop is 0.07 mm. Moving up in fibre count does not reduce thickness, so weight goes up; Module 2 looks at this in depth.
Who are W-shape lashes for?
For the lash artist, they make sense if you already isolate confidently, control your adhesive and want to offer light or hybrid volume in shorter appointments. If you are just starting out, consolidate classic technique first: a premade fan will not fix poor isolation. For the client, the suppliers we consulted position them for light, textured volume looks. The final decision depends on her natural lashes (thickness, length, direction and health), which you will learn to assess in the next module.
Common mistakes
- Assuming all W lashes are the same: fibre count, tip shape and base differ by brand.
- Treating a W like a rounded fan: over-dipping the base or applying it with borderline isolation.
- Believing “premade” means “no technique needed”: isolation, adhesive amount and placement still decide the result.
- Choosing on looks alone without considering the weight the natural lash can carry.
- Taking marketing claims (retention, lightness, “won’t twist”) as proven facts.
Module summary
- W-shape lashes are premade fans whose fibres open into W-shaped tips from a joined base.
- The D number gives the fibre count, but structure and base vary between manufacturers.
- Compared with handmade fans, they gain speed and consistency and lose customisation.
- The W Shape Technological Volume lashes come in 3D, 4D and 5D, 0.07 mm, C and D curls and MIX 8–15 mm.
- They require precise isolation and a small amount of adhesive.
Self-assessment
What does the “D” in a 4D W lash mean?
The number of fibres in each unit, by industry convention. Check it on the tray, because construction varies between brands.
What is the main advantage of a handmade fan over a premade W?
Customisation: you can adjust width, fibre count and spread to each natural lash, and its thin base needs less adhesive.
Why does a W lash call for especially careful isolation?
Because its tips are wider than its base, so a neighbouring lash that is not fully separated sticks to it easily, creating stickies.
What happens if adhesive travels up to the point where the tips split?
It can fuse them into a single spike that is heavier and less attractive.
A website claims the flat base “guarantees better retention”. How do you assess that?
As a marketing claim not backed by independent studies. Retention depends mainly on technique, adhesive, room conditions and the client.
