Course: Premade fans course · Module 4 of 4
Premade fans save time, but the same mistakes crop up again and again: fans that are too heavy, too much glue, poorly attached bases, trays stored carelessly and clients who don’t know how to look after their lashes. In this final module you’ll go over the most common mistakes with premade fans and how to fix them, how to combine ready-made fans with handmade fans and classics, how to store trays and adhesive, what affects retention and which aftercare instructions to give your clients.
Module objectives
- Spot the most common mistakes with ready-made fans and know how to fix them.
- Combine premades, handmade fans and classics without unbalancing the weight.
- Keep fan trays and adhesive in good condition.
- Understand the factors that affect retention and how often infills are needed.
- Explain aftercare and warning signs to your client.
Common mistakes with premade fans
| Mistake | What happens | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| — | — | — |
| Fan too heavy for the natural lash | Lashes look weaker at every infill; premature shedding (Lash Jungle, Lash Affair) | Choose D, diameter and length to suit the lash (module 2); when in doubt, go lighter |
| One fan on several lashes | Damage to the natural lashes and early fallout (Lash Jungle) | Always isolate a single lash |
| Too much glue, or scooping the drop | Clumped fans and stickies (Lash Jungle, London Lash) | Dip only the base, in the centre of the drop, sliding in and out |
| Too little glue or poor base contact | Fans pop off quickly (Lash Jungle, Lashbase) | At least 2 mm of contact with no gaps |
| Base touching the skin | Irritation of the skin or follicle (Lashbase) | Leave about 0.5 mm of space |
| Fan squashed or twisted when lifted | Less volume, uneven look (Lash Affair) | Peel it off gently and check it before dipping |
| Extensions too long | More weight; the extension droops, pops off and weakens the lash (Lash Affair) | No more than about 2 mm longer than the natural lash |
| Old or stringy adhesive | Poor bonding (Lash Jungle) | Use recently opened bottles and change the drop every 15–20 minutes |
| Not checking for stickies | Pain and root damage when lashes pull apart (London Lash) | Check root to tip during and at the end |
Practical tip: if a client keeps coming back to infills with lots of lashes missing in the same area, check the fan weight in that area and how much glue you’re using before you blame the adhesive or the client.
Combining premades with handmade fans and classics
Premade and handmade in the same set
Lash Affair notes that many successful artists use a combination of both. Its split: handmade fans for areas that need precision, such as the inner corners and sparse sections, and ready-made fans for the bulk of the set. To make the mix seamless:
- Match diameter and fibre count between the premades and your own fans in the same area, so weight and density are similar.
- Match the spread of your handmade fans to the premades (if you use long-stem, narrow premades, your own fans shouldn’t be much wider, and vice versa).
- Use the same curl throughout a section, or transition gradually.
Hybrid sets with classics
A hybrid set mixes single classic extensions and volume fans along the lash line (Lash Affair). Some promade manufacturers suggest specific combinations: Curacoro, for example, recommends 4D in 0.07 or 5D–6D in 0.05 alongside classics for hybrid sets. Keep module 2’s limits in mind, though: Lash Jungle puts a strong lash’s capacity at around the equivalent of 0.18 mm and warns that classics of 0.18 or above (0.20, 0.25) are normally considered too heavy, even for clients with strong natural lashes. In a hybrid, every natural lash should carry only what it can support, whether it holds a classic or a fan.
Storing your trays
On storing fan trays, such as those in our lashes category, the sources offer general guidance rather than technical data:
- Protect them from dust and dirt. Keep trays closed when you’re not using them and store them in organisers or boxes; London Lash sells a magnetic organiser designed to protect premade fan palettes from dust, dirt and bacteria.
- Airtight containers. Sugarlash PRO recommends storing fans in airtight containers.
- Label and organise by dimension, diameter, curl and length so you can find what you need quickly while mapping. Lash Jungle notes that larger trays take up more storage space, especially if you stock many sizes.
- Heat and sunlight: we couldn’t find a reliable source on whether heat or sunlight changes the curl of fans. If in doubt, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and avoid leaving trays somewhere hot or in direct sun.
Storing adhesive
Adhesive has a direct effect on retention. Lash Jungle recommends storing it in an airtight container somewhere cool and dry, away from sunlight, and not in a fridge or freezer; replacing the bottle 4 weeks after opening, because opened glue absorbs moisture; and shaking it well before use. These figures come from one manufacturer, so always check the information for the adhesive you use, such as those in our glue and liquids category.
Retention: what makes the difference
How long a set lasts depends on several factors. Lash Jungle highlights:
- Environment: humidity and temperature within your adhesive manufacturer’s range, monitored with a hygrometer. For its own adhesives that’s 50–60% humidity and 21–25°C; above 65% humidity the glue cures too fast, and cold, dry conditions make it cure too slowly.
- Adhesive speed that matches yours: glue that’s too fast for a beginner hurts retention.
- Prep: natural lashes must be clean before you start; makeup and debris make extensions fail.
- Application: at least 2 mm of contact with no gaps, and one lash per fan.
- Weight: extensions that are too heavy for the natural lash won’t hold.
- Client factors: Lash Jungle lists, among others, very oily skin, previous allergic reactions, sensitive eyes and frequent use of oil-based cleansers as making a client less suitable.
It also helps to explain to clients that some shedding is natural. Lash Affair points out that when a natural lash completes its cycle and falls out, the extension goes with it, that losing one to five lashes per eye per day is normal, and that this is why infills are needed. Lash Affair and Sugarlash PRO recommend infills every two to three weeks; Lash Affair warns that waiting four weeks or longer makes infills longer and more costly.
Aftercare for your client
Give these instructions verbally and in writing. They reflect the sources consulted; adjust the timings to your adhesive manufacturer’s instructions:
- Keep lashes dry at first. Sugarlash PRO recommends keeping lashes dry for the first 24 hours and avoiding steam, saunas, hot showers and sweaty workouts. EyeWiki notes that clients are advised not to wash their face in the first few hours, as the glue may take up to six hours to set completely. The sources don’t agree on the exact time, so follow your adhesive’s instructions.
- Cleanse daily with an oil-free, lash-safe foaming cleanser (Lash Affair). A dedicated lash shampoo, like those in our glue and liquids category, makes this easier.
- Brush with a clean, dry spoolie every morning and after cleansing (Lash Affair).
- No oil-based products around the eyes: oil breaks down the adhesive (Lash Affair, Sugarlash PRO).
- Mascara: if used at all, only a water-based, extension-safe formula on the tips; never waterproof (Lash Affair).
- Sleep on the back or side, with a silk or satin pillowcase or a contoured sleep mask (Lash Affair, Sugarlash PRO).
- Don’t pull or pick at the extensions; if one feels loose, book an appointment instead of removing it (Lash Affair).
Warning signs
EyeWiki describes complications such as eye irritation and redness (keratoconjunctivitis) and allergic reactions to the adhesive or tape, which can appear hours or days after the appointment. If a client has intense itching, swelling, pain or redness that doesn’t settle, the extensions should be removed by a professional and she should see a healthcare professional. Don’t give treatment or medical advice.
Module summary
- Most premade fan problems come from excess weight, the wrong amount of glue, poor base contact or not checking your work.
- You can combine premades and handmade fans by matching diameter, fibre count, spread and curl by zone.
- In hybrids, each natural lash should carry only what it can support.
- Keep trays closed, organised and dust-free; keep adhesive sealed, fresh and out of the sun, per its manufacturer.
- Retention depends on environment, adhesive, prep, application, weight and the client.
- Infills are recommended every two to three weeks, and daily care makes the set last longer.
- If there’s a reaction: remove and refer to a healthcare professional.
Self-assessment
A client keeps losing fans in the centre of the eye. What do you check first?
The fan weight in that area (D, diameter and length), the amount of glue and the base contact, as well as room conditions and the state of the adhesive.
How does Lash Affair suggest splitting handmade and premade fans in one set?
Handmade fans for areas that need precision, such as inner corners and sparse sections, and ready-made fans for the bulk of the set.
What does Lash Jungle say about storing adhesive?
Store it in an airtight container somewhere cool and dry, away from sunlight, not in the fridge, and replace it 4 weeks after opening.
How often are infills recommended?
Every two to three weeks, according to Lash Affair and Sugarlash PRO.
Why should clients avoid oil-based products around the eyes?
Because oil breaks down the adhesive and shortens the life of the extensions.
